What Is A Midi Tummy Tuck? Everything You Need To Know

If you’ve been wanting to slim your midsection but think a full tummy tuck is too extensive, a midi tummy tuck may be the right fit for you. This elegant procedure is a great option for patients with a moderate amount of loose skin and muscle laxity below the belly button.

In terms of invasiveness, recovery, and downtime, the midi tummy tuck falls in between the mini and full abdominoplasty. It provides noticeable tightening and contouring with less downtime and no belly button scar, making it a great option for patients who have loose skin primarily below the belly button and wish to avoid an incision around the belly button itself.

We have put together a guide on everything you need to know about a mid-tummy tuck to help you make an informed decision.

What Is A Midi Tummy Tuck?

A midi-tummy tuck is a procedure ideal for patients who have moderately loose skin in the lower abdomen, a normal to high belly button position, with or without diastasis recti. It provides greater skin tightening and muscle repair than a mini tuck, but is less invasive than a full abdominoplasty.

During this procedure, Dr Turin makes a low incision at the bottom of the abdomen similar to a traditional tummy tuck. Then, we elevate the loose skin off the abdominal wall, keeping the belly button attached to the skin (normally it stays attached to the abdominal wall in a traditional tummy tuck). This is also known as “floating the belly button”. Then, if the muscles have any separation, it can be addressed, and then the skin is pulled tight and extra skin is removed. Liposuction to the trunk (love handles, waist, flanks, etc) is usually done at the same time. Since the belly button is not removed from the skin, it still looks completely natural, but it will be positioned slightly lower on the abdomen. Compared to a full abdominalplasty, this surgery leaves the lower scar that is shorter and easily concealable while keeping the belly button intact.

These advantages make the midi-tummy tuck a great option for the patients who only have moderate skin laxity below the belly button.

Benefits Of A Midi Tummy Tuck

Here are some of the reasons why the midi tummy tuck has been gaining popularity:

  • Provides a flatter, firmer midsection
  • Long-lasting, natural-looking results when combined with a healthy lifestyle
  • Addresses skin and muscle laxity in one surgery
  • No belly button scar
  • Leaves a discreet scar that can be concealed by underwear
  • Helps boost confidence by improving contours
  • Ideal for patients who want significant change without a significant recovery

What’s The Difference Between A Midi, Mini, and Full Tummy Tuck?

When it comes to tummy tucks, one size does not fit all. Knowing the differences between the different types can help you find the option that fits your goals and lifestyle best.

Mini Tummy Tuck

This procedure is a great fit for patients with a small amount of excess skin above the pubic region, making it an excellent choice if you’re unhappy with your C-section scar. During this procedure, a surgeon tightens the skin and tissue below the belly button. A mini tummy tuck does not involve muscle repair or a belly button incision. This option offers the fastest recovery, shortest downtime, and smallest scar of the tummy tuck procedures.

Midi Tummy Tuck

This procedure is the perfect middle ground between the mini and full tummy tuck. It tightens the abdominal muscles and removes moderate amounts of excess skin in the lower belly. Since it doesn’t need to reposition the belly button, it doesn’t leave a belly button scar. The length of the incision is between the mini and full abdominoplasties, balancing noticeable results with a faster recovery.

Full Tummy Tuck

A full tummy tuck is ideal for patients with significantly loose skin, muscle separation, and a lower belly button. This extensive surgery tightens muscles along the entire abdomen, removes excess skin, and repositions the belly button. While the recovery and scar are the longest of these options, it delivers the most dramatic results.

Ideal Candidates For a Midi Tummy Tuck

The midi tummy tuck is a phenomenal option for patients who want visible, natural-looking changes without the recovery or scarring from a full abdominoplasty.

This procedure may be an ideal fit for you if you have:

  • Moderately loose skin below your belly button
  • Some abdominal muscle laxity
  • A normal to high belly button position
  • A stable weight and are in good overall health
  • Realistic expectations about the results and recovery

Additionally, if you want greater results than a tummy tuck and a quicker recovery time than a full abdominoplasty, this procedure may be right for you. A midi tummy tuck is a good option if you’re looking to get back on your feet and feel the confidence that comes with a noticeably fatter, firmer mid-section.

The Midi Tummy Tuck Procedure

A midi tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia or twilight anesthesia. Depending on the extent of the surgery, it usually takes 3-4 hours.

Here’s what happens during this procedure:

  • Incision: Your surgeon will place a horizontal incision low on the abdomen. This incision will leave a scar, but it’s discreetly placed so you can easily conceal it.
  • Muscle Repair: The surgeon will lift the abdominal skin and stitch the separated muscles together. This process results in a narrower waistline and firmer abdomen.
  • Skin and Fat Removal: Excess skin and fat below the belly button are carefully removed while the upper abdomen remains untouched. Liposuction can also be used to remove fat deposits and further enhance your abdominal contours.
  • Closure: At the end of this procedure, your surgeon will redrape your abdominal skin over the muscles and close your incisions. Drains may also be placed near the incision to help remove excess fluid.

Midi Tummy Tuck Recovery

Generally, recovery from a midi tummy tuck falls in between the mini and full tummy tuck recovery timelines, striking a balance between significant results and less downtime.

While each patient’s recovery experience is different, here’s an idea of what you can expect:

First 1-2 Weeks

During this initial phase of recovery, swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common. Wearing a compression garment can help reduce swelling, and following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions will make recovery as smooth as possible. Light walking can help prevent blood clots, but it’s best to avoid strenuous activities.

Weeks 3-4

At this point, you should see a noticeable improvement in swelling and discomfort. You can gradually return to work and normal activities, but still avoid core workouts and activities that could strain the abdominal muscles.

Weeks 5-6 and Beyond

Most patients feel comfortable returning to their daily routine at this stage in their recovery with their surgeon’s approval. Swelling and discomfort should have subsided further, and you should start to feel more energy. Your scar will still be healing at this point, but it will fade over time. As your body continues to recover from muscle repair, it’s best to wait 3 months before doing any heavy lifting.

Midi Tummy Tuck Results

One of the best parts of getting a mid-tummy tuck is seeing your results unfold. While you may notice some initial improvements after surgery, including a firmer midsection, your full results will develop after the swelling has subsided.

It’s important to know that the full healing process will take time, but the incredible results are worth the wait. Over the first few weeks, you’ll see your true contours begin to emerge as your swelling starts to resolve. Your scar may look slightly raised, but it will soften during the next several months.

You’ll see a difference immediately, and then as your body continues to adjust to its new physique after surgery, you’ll see more enhancements in the months to come.

Maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle can help you enjoy long-lasting, natural-looking results for many years to come.
