Why Consider Rhinoplasty?
- Refine the shape, size, or angle of the nose
- Correct nasal asymmetry or deformities
- Improve breathing function by addressing structural issues
- Create a more balanced and harmonious facial appearance
- Address issues such as a dorsal hump, wide nostrils, or a bulbous tip
Types of Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty isn’t a one-size-fits-all procedure. Rather, it’s customizable and can address a wide variety of concerns. Here are the five main types of rhinoplasty and how they work.
Open Rhinoplasty
During an open rhinoplasty, a surgeon makes small incisions both inside and outside of the nose. The outer incision goes across the cartilage and allows the surgeon to open the nose and gain full access to the interior.
An open rhinoplasty gives the surgeon easier access to all the nasal structures. This type of surgery is ideal for significant nose reshaping, including tip refinement, bridge reduction, and nostril narrowing.
Closed Rhinoplasty
A closed rhinoplasty occurs when the surgeon makes incisions only on the inside of the nostril. This method limits access to the interior of the nose. It also eliminates visible scarring.
A closed rhinoplasty works best for minor to moderate nasal adjustments. It may be a good option for patients who want to improve symmetry, or reduce a dorsal hump.
Reduction Rhinoplasty
A reduction rhinoplasty (commonly referred to as a “nose job”) involves surgical reduction of the size of the nose. This is one of the most popular types of rhinoplasty. It may involve reshaping the nostrils, narrowing the nasal bridge, and removing portions of bone and cartilage.
A reduction rhinoplasty may also involve removing some of the skin that attaches the cheeks to the nostrils. Then, a surgeon may reattach the nostrils at a narrower point to reduce the width of the nose.
Revision Rhinoplasty
Revision rhinoplasty corrects issues that arise during an initial rhinoplasty. If you’re dissatisfied with the results of your first surgery or you experience breathing difficulties or slow healing, you may need a second surgery.
The goal of a revision rhinoplasty is to correct any issues caused by the initial surgery. This is a challenging surgical procedure, and it’s important to maintain realistic treatment results.
What to Expect From Rhinoplasty Surgery
- Open rhinoplasty: Involves a small incision on the columella for more extensive reshaping.
- Closed rhinoplasty: Involves incisions made within the nostrils for minimal scarring.
Rhinoplasty Recovery Timeline and Results
After surgery, you can expect swelling, bruising, and discomfort, particularly around the eyes and nose. These symptoms typically subside within 1-2 weeks. You’ll need to wear a nasal splint for the first week, and most patients can return to work within 7-10 days. Final results may take several months to reveal themselves as swelling diminishes fully.
Here’s a more in-depth recovery timeline detailing what to expect after treatment. Keep in mind that no two bodies are the same, so your recovery may look different from someone else’s. Still, this timeline can give you a general idea of how the typical recovery timeline looks.
Week 1
The first few days after nose surgery are the hardest and most painful. You’ll have notable swelling, and you may not be able to breathe through your nose for a while. You’ll also have to wear an external splint and internal nasal packing to reduce your bleeding and infection risk. Many people notice bruising around their nose and eyes for a couple of weeks after surgery.
By the end of the first week, your discomfort should begin to decrease. Apply ice as recommended by Dr. Turin to soothe the area and reduce swelling. Your sutures and splints all come off at the end of week 1 and you’ll feel WAY better!
Week 2
You’ll notice significant improvements in inflammation and bruising during week 2. Dr. Turin may clear you to return to work during this time, but avoid strenuous activities. Limit your exposure to sunlight since your skin will be very sensitive during this time.
Month 1
A month after your nose job, you should look and feel much better. Most people won’t be able to tell you’ve had a nose job. As swelling continues to subside, you’ll be able to see the final results of your treatment. This is when many patients get the most excited.
You can probably wear sunglasses by the end of month 1. You should also be able to engage in reasonable physical activity, though you’ll still want to avoid over-straining yourself.
Months 2-3
By the end of month three, your swelling should be practically unnoticeable. You’re almost completely healed, but you should still avoid contact sports and other activities that could damage your nose.
Months 6-12
At this time, you will probably be cleared to play contact sports somewhere around 6-12 months after treatment. If you notice anything you don’t like about the shape of your new nose or if you have complications, talk to Dr. Turin. This is the time to discuss potential retreatment if you’re not satisfied with your results.

Rhinoplasty FAQs
How Long Does Rhinoplasty Take to Heal?
While initial recovery takes about 1-2 weeks, the final rhinoplasty results may take up to a year to fully settle. However, most patients see significant improvement within 4-6 weeks.
Where to Find a Rhinoplasty Surgeon Near Me in Scottsdale, AZ?
A quick online search can help you find a rhinoplasty surgeon near you in Scottsdale. Look for a skilled provider, like Koda Plastic Surgery, with a long history of successful patient outcomes.
Will There Be Visible Scars?
All incisions are made within the nostrils for closed rhinoplasty, leaving no visible scars. A small scar will be hidden on the columella for open rhinoplasty, which typically fades with time.
How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost?
We like to be as transparent as possible with our pricing. Even though it will obviously vary significantly from patient to patient, we will try to put up a monthly post on our pricing page with approximate average prices for the most commonly requested procedures. You can take a look at our page here.
How long does a nose rhinoplasty last?
Rhinoplasty is a permanent procedure, and results typically last a lifetime. However, factors like aging, skin type, facial trauma, lifestyle, and surgical technique can influence how the nose changes over time. While some gradual shifts may occur due to aging, a well-performed rhinoplasty provides long-lasting results.
How painful is a rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is not very painful, with most patients rating their pain 0–4 out of 10 the day after surgery. Discomfort typically lasts 36–72 hours and can be managed with pain medication or a long-acting numbing agent provided by the surgeon. The nose may remain sensitive for a few months, but severe pain is uncommon.
Is it a good idea to get a nose job?
Getting a rhinoplasty is a personal decision and can be a good idea if you have medical or cosmetic reasons for wanting to change your nose. Medically, it can help with breathing problems, a deviated septum, or congenital deformities. Cosmetically, it can improve the size, shape, symmetry, and overall facial balance, potentially boosting self-esteem and confidence. Consulting with a qualified surgeon can help determine if it’s right for you.
When is the best age to get a rhinoplasty?
The average age for rhinoplasty is typically between 18 and 40. Many young adults in their 20s consider the procedure, as their noses may have been a source of insecurity for years. At this age, they are often able to make such decisions and afford the procedure.
Can a nose job make me look younger?
A nose job can make you look 2 to 3 years younger, but it is not primarily performed for anti-aging or facial rejuvenation purposes.
