Eliminate issues caused by implants and achieve a new look that feels right for you.
Reduce Breast Implant Concernsand Feel More Comfortable in Your Skin
Getting breast implants should be an exciting, confidence-boosting experience. Whether you scheduled the surgery to correct asymmetrical breasts or you did it to achieve a larger cup size, the results are expected to be life-changing. Unfortunately, not all breast implant journeys have a happy ending. Some lead to a collection of undesirable symptoms referred to as breast implant illness (BII). Sometimes your preferences or your body change. Either way, if you feel that your breast implants are no longer bringing you the joy and confidence they should, we’re happy to help you.
The solution, thankfully, is super simple: removing the implants is a straightforward procedure with minimal recovery, and it can be done at your convenience in the comfort of our clinic. The complicated part of this situation is the management of the skin and breast tissues after they’ve been stretched out by the implants and what to do with the capsule in cases of BII.

Why Are You Considering
Explant Surgery?
There are really only two common reasons why women get breast implants: to increase their breast size or to correct asymmetry. However, there are many more reasons why somebody may want to remove the breast implants. These range from breast implant illness (BII), capsular contracture, implant rupture, poor implant positioning or symmetry, a change in lifestyle so that the implants are no longer compatible with your exercise or clothing preferences, changes in the breast tissue itself over time so that the implants no longer look attractive, or just plain old changing and preferences as you grow older.
Thankfully, these all have a common solution: removing the implants should take care of the problem. We always take this topic very seriously and ensure that this decision is well thought out, given that it is very easy to remove breast implants, but in these revision cases, it becomes significantly harder to place them back. Almost always, by the time our patients are sitting in our clinic and discussing with Dr. Turin their own personal reasons for explantation, their mind is relatively made up, and we are happy to help execute their chosen plan.
Remember, your implants should bring you happiness and make your life better. If you feel that they’re instead causing mental stress, discomfort, or simply aren’t making you happy, then it’s probably time to get them out.
Breast Implant Illness (BII)
Breast implant illness (BII) has really changed the landscape of how we discuss breast augmentation surgery. It is clearly a very real phenomenon, although it defies our ability to really quantify it and study it in detail. Because it is thankfully quite rare, and the presentation is so variable, the evidence regarding its causes, risk factors, and treatment is relatively lower quality compared to many other areas of surgery and medicine. We do know that it is something that some women experience after undergoing silicone breast implant placement. We do know that he can have one or multiple components, ranging from things like hair loss and skin texture changes to relatively significant autoimmune diseases. We also know that the most effective path to a cure is simply removing the breast implants.
It is, of course, very frustrating to undergo cosmetic surgery for the sake of improving your self-esteem and appearance, only to then experience these unwelcome side effects. We, therefore, have a special pathway to provide maximum support and comfort while we go through the explantation and any reconstructive procedures, so that the entire process is maximally easy and absolutely geared towards restoring your confidence and self-esteem while still achieving a beautiful and elegant result.
What About the Capsule?
Removing the capsule, which is the scar formed around the implant, is generally considered in cases of breast implant illness (BII) or silicone implant rupture. In both of these cases, if the implant is not being replaced with a new one, evidence seems to show that outcomes in terms of appearance and health are about the same whether you leave the capsule in place or whether it is removed at the same time as the implant itself.
That being said, most patients opt to have the capsule removed as well, for fear that any component of the implant that is causing an issue could still be lodged in the capsule tissue itself. There is also something to be said for the thought that the capsule staying behind is a little bit of a reminder of the implant that used to be there, and for a patient that really wishes to move on from that experience, it may be therapeutic to have a “clean break” and remove the capsule as well.
We offer total capsulectomies (which are often called ‘en bloc’ capsulectomies) to all of our patients undergoing explant surgery. During the consultation, we will create a custom plan for you and give you a very specific recommendation on what a capsulectomy would involve based on whether the implant is above or below the muscle, whether there has been any silicone leak, and how the capsulectomy would affect your healing. Either way, we believe that this is the patient’s choice, and our role is to provide high-quality education and give you all the data you need to make your own choice.
What Are Symptoms of Breast Implant Illness?
Are you concerned you have BII? BII can be tricky to diagnose because the symptoms are so varied. They’re often mistaken for different illnesses or diseases. Explant Surgery for BII Benefits
Most women don’t get breast implants with the intention of removing them down the road. But most people agree that good health is more important than having the “perfect” body. In some cases, breast augmentation can cause more harm than good. If you’re experiencing negative health effects from your implants or are worried about experiencing them down the road, you may want to schedule a capsulectomy in Scottsdale. Here are some of the top benefits associated with explant surgery:
- A capsulectomy may relieve your BII symptoms completely.
- Removing implants can bring you peace of mind if you’re concerned you may develop unwanted symptoms or illnesses from having them in your body.
- When you have your implants removed, early breast cancer detection with a mammogram becomes easier.
- Removing implants now means you won’t have to worry about the possibility of them rupturing and requiring replacement in the future.
