What Is RibXCar Rib Remodeling Surgery?
How the Procedure Works
After a detailed consultation and confirming that you are an appropriate candidate for the procedure, we first obtain a CT scan of your ribcage. Dr. Turin will review this personally and go over the imaging findings with you, pointing out any asymmetry or scoliosis, as well as explaining which ribs he suggests treating and where, to achieve a very natural transition from the chest to the waist.
Once the plan is confirmed, he will then use ultrasound to find and confirm these locations once you’re comfortable in the OR. He is meticulous about using long-acting pain relief medications to numb up all the target areas—so much so that we can actually do this procedure under twilight, avoiding general anesthesia completely if you like! Next, Dr. Turin will make a small pokehole, about the size of a pencil tip, over each rib location and sneak in a custom-designed piezotome handpiece. This is a specialized device used for exquisitely precise bone cutting, as it does not damage the surrounding tissue, therefore causing minimal trauma. After scoring the outer layer of the rib, it is gently mobilized, creating a partial fracture.
The process is repeated symmetrically and with precision. The result: a beautifully defined waistline with no visible surgical scars and a recovery that is far more manageable than previous rib modification techniques.
Recovery & Results: What to Expect
After surgery, patients wear a custom corset to shape the ribs that were mobilized in the OR. This is the MOST IMPORTANT component of the entire process and where you will benefit the most from Dr. Turin’s expertise. Mobilizing the bones is relatively straightforward, but it’s the molding, corset wear, and coaching on tightening the corset that will make the difference between a mediocre result that you may see elsewhere and the incredible results that Dr. Turin can achieve. We source specially made corsets for our patients that fit the mobilized ribs and can be customized for asymmetry and scoliosis. This level of detail during the recovery is the absolute key to success.
Usually, we’ll ask you to wear the corset 24/7 for the first week, and thereafter take it off only every few days to shower underneath—this will allow the bones to set quicker and tighter.
Patients typically return to light activity or work within 7–10 days, with more vigorous activity allowed after six weeks. Full exercise is allowed after 3 months, once the corset can be removed.
After ~3-4 months, the results are effectively permanent—most patients achieve up to a 4″ decrease in waist size, depending on their anatomy and commitment to the recovery protocol.

Wait, so are ribs removed?
NO! This is the most common misconception about this procedure—we do NOT remove ANY portion of the rib or any other structure, which is why the RIbXCar technique is SO much more superior in terms of recovery. By gently remodeling the ribs and then allowing them to heal in their new position, we are able to achieve an incredibly small waist for our patients with a minimally invasive approach.
