Diet and exercise routines play a large role in staying trim and fit. Unfortunately, for many people, dieting and working out for hours each day is not enough to eliminate certain areas of fat buildup. Liposuction, known as lipoplasty or “lipo,” is the most popular and most effective fat reduction method—perfecting for targeting those resistant fat areas. In fact, countless people use liposuction each year to eliminate stubborn bulges of fat that resist diet and exercise.
If you’re tired of dealing with stubborn fat in problematic areas like the tummy, thighs, back, or upper arms, contact the experts of KODA Plastic Surgery. What to Expect During
Liposuction Surgery
Your experience starts long before the actual procedure. Once you’ve had a chance to meet with Dr. Turin and agree on the plan, we will set up your pre-operative appointment where you will have more time dedicated to really going into details about your preferences, recovery, etc. You’ll also get Dr. Turin’s cell phone number at that time so that you can reach out to him directly with any other questions that come up. If you’d like to have another in-person or virtual meeting before surgery, we will make that happen for you also – whatever it takes until you’re totally comfortable and in the right frame of mind!
On the day of surgery, you’ll talk again with Dr. Turin and go over all the markings together. We prefer to do the procedure in the comfort of our clinic procedure room, where you’ll have some sedation and mild pain medications to make you comfortable. However, you’ll still be awake with NO general anesthesia. We take A LOT of pride in providing a very comfortable experience for our patients. There are also a lot of benefits to avoiding general anesthesia besides the obvious cost savings. Moreover, when you’re comfortable and awake, the experience changes – it’s no longer that “you’re having something done.” Instead, it becomes us working together to create the changes you want to see. You will feel so much more ownership of your results!
The procedure usually lasts around 2.5-4 hours – the first 30-60 minutes of that to ensure you’re in the perfect mind space and the vibes are just right before we start. Then we go on to numb up all the areas to be treated with a lidocaine solution, and only once that’s fully kicked in do we start the liposuction – and at this point, the lidocaine makes it a virtually painless experience. After we treat all the target areas, we close the access sites and place you in a compression garment before letting you go, awake, to recover in the comfort of your own home.

Why Patients Choose Dr. Turin for Lipo360 and HD Liposuction
Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the country, but not all liposuction procedures are the same. While traditional liposuction focuses primarily on more or less sophisticated ‘debulking” of certain target areas, Dr. Sergey Turin instead takes a more comprehensive body contouring approach to create balance, proportion, and natural-looking definition – the key is creating a beautiful body shape, not just getting some volume out.
About half of our practice is patients from Scottsdale, Phoenix, Mesa, Gilbert, and throughout Arizona with the other half flying in from all over the US, Canada, Mexico and overseas to work with Dr. Turin because of his commitment to personalized treatment plans, advanced body sculpting techniques, and a patient experience centered around comfort and safety.
One of the most unique aspects of Dr. Turin’s approach is his preference to perform liposuction under local anesthesia with oral or IV sedation rather than general anesthesia whenever appropriate. This allows patients to avoid the discomfort and many of the risks, recovery concerns, and costs associated with being fully asleep during surgery. He is an expert in ‘awake’ lipo using oral sedation only and was invited to present and moderate a panel at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons meeting in Oct 2026, and has performed surgeries ranging from deep plane facelifts to full mommy makeovers under oral sedation only. However, most patients in our practice do choose the option of IV or “twilight” anesthesia to hit that sweet spot of having a very comfortable experience while avoiding the downsides of general anesthesia like need for intubation, nausea, etc.
General anesthesia for liposuction is still very common in many practices as it allows the surgeon to move more quickly and have less concern regarding discomfort in the patient. However, our priority is getting the perfect result, not speed or convenience.
Rather than focusing on a single problem area, Dr. Turin only performs Lipo360 to address the entire midsection. By treating the abdomen, waist, flanks, lower back, and surrounding areas together, he can create smoother transitions and more natural body proportions – yes, it’s more areas to be treated, but it LOOKS BETTER. Outside of revision cases where truly just a single area is of concern, we will explain to you that treating the whole trunk will always create a more natural and sculpted result. Patients often will question the necessity of doing this when their primary concern is the front of the stomach or just the love handles, but think of it like this: it you have an apple and you’d like to make a smaller version of it, does it look good if you just take a big bite out of one side of it? No – it just like lopsided now – to create a proper shape changes, you have to go all the way around so that all the contour on the front, back and sides of the body match each other!
What Is Lipo360?
- Upper abdomen
- Lower abdomen
- Waist
- Love handles
- Flanks
- Lower back
- Bra line area
- Back rolls
Simplistically, you can think of this like working on the whole trunk, from the breast creases down to the groin and from the shoulder blades down to the tailbone.
Many patients are surprised to learn that removing fat from the abdomen alone may not produce the dramatic improvement they are hoping for. The waist, flanks, and lower back all contribute significantly to overall body shape.
Lipo360 addresses these areas together to create a more defined waistline, smoother contours, and improved body proportions.
Again – we only want to create excellent body shapes, and Lipo360 will pretty much always provide a more comprehensive result than treating isolated areas individually.
Real Patient Results
When considering liposuction, the quality of a surgeon’s results often speaks louder than any description. We encourage patients to spend time reviewing our before and after gallery to better understand the level of contouring, symmetry, and natural-looking outcomes Dr. Turin consistently achieves.
Below are examples of actual patients who underwent Lipo360, liposuction, and advanced body contouring procedures at KODA Plastic Surgery. Each result is customized to the patient’s anatomy and goals, helping create outcomes that look balanced, proportional, and authentic.
One recommendation I would strongly consider is displaying 10 to 15 of your strongest before-and-after cases directly on the page rather than requiring visitors to click into a separate gallery. Patients often make decisions based on visual proof, and reducing the number of clicks required to see your results can improve engagement and conversions.
Liposuction for Men
Gentlemen – gym and diet, TRT or not, at some point you will reach the limit of the transformation that your body is naturally able to deliver. Those stubborn love handles, the fullness in the chest, the lower belly roll – those often times can be as impossible to change in the gym and kitchen as the shape of your ears (despite what the cover of Men’s Health promises you). Let’s be grateful that we have an effective, reliably solution – liposuction – which has now been elevated to the level you deserve. Again, not just debulking you – we’re talking about sculpting you. As Michelangelo said about David – ‘the statue is inside the block of marble, I just remove what’s unnecessary”. In the same way, you’ve built the muscle and the physique – now we need to carefully remove the excess fat covering it so that you can show off your efforts.
Most men will choose to focus on the trunk, treating the abs, love handles and chest, but we always customize the plan to each body. Besides bringing out the abs, we by default will focus on the details like highlighting the obliques (aka Adonis’ belt), emptying out the areas to the sides of the pecs that really makes the chest pop, highlighting the latissimus muscles and terminating the love handles with extreme prejudice. Wearing a polo or dress shirt without a muffin top – won’t that be nice?
Liposuction With Fat Transfer
Just as most of us have areas that we’d like to decrease or sculpt, we often will also have areas we want to enhance or add volume to. When the primary concern is adding volume (to the hips or buttocks in a BBL type of procedure – big or small, or to the breasts, for example), we’ll be focusing our liposuction plan on optimizing the harvest.
However, if you’re primary focusing on liposuction, then we will be talking about fat grafting as an optional adjunct since we can often strategically use the liposuctioned fat to enhance your results. In revision cases we will also be discussing doing fat grafting to help improve preexisting contour issues etc – these will tend to be complex conversations and Dr. Turin will be bringing all his experience to the table for these cases.
The most common fat transfer scenarios include grafting to the hips/buttocks, chest, or facial fat grafting- we have more details about these procedures here:

Liposuction Treatment Areas
Liposuction typically targets areas with excess fat deposits. Common treatment areas include:
- Abdomen – both lower and upper belly
- Flanks or hips/love handles
- Buttocks
- Neck and chin area
- Inner knee and calves
- Upper arms
- Back and armpit area
- Thighs – inner and outer
- Mons pubis – pubic region
- Chest – a popular treatment area for men
Recovery and Aftercare
Your liposuction recovery depends on your specific operation. Most patients can expect:
- Some temporary bruising
- Swelling
- Numbness
- Tenderness
All side effects are confined to the treated area(s) and typically disappear within a few days.
Other lipo aftercare instructions and tips include:
- Wear a compression garment to reduce swelling
- Limit strenuous activity for several weeks after surgery.
- Patients can return to work within about 7 days following their liposuction procedure.
Recovery Timeline
Back to work: 7 days
Disappearing of side effects: within a few days
Liposuction Results*
As with any cosmetic procedure, individual experiences will vary.* Swelling generally subsides within several weeks, though for some patients, it may take several months to disappear completely. Unlike weight loss treatments that reduce the size of fat cells, liposuction removes fat cells entirely from the body. Once these cells are eliminated, they cannot regenerate. Liposuction offers patients lasting fat reduction. However, it is recommended that patients maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen post-surgery to preserve their results. Gaining weight can diminish the visible effects of liposuction.
Liposuction Candidates
As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Turin prioritizes your safety and ultimate satisfaction. To ensure these priorities are met, he will consider several factors before determining if liposuction is the most suitable option for your needs.
Factors influencing your liposuction candidacy include:
- Liposuction is not a weight loss solution but ideal for body contouring and toning.
- Liposuction is best suited for individuals in good physical and emotional health.
- Adequate time off for recovery is essential for proper healing and optimal results.
Additional considerations include your expectations and goals, which will be thoroughly discussed during your initial consultation with Dr. Turin.
Liposuction is highly effective for removing stubborn fat deposits, resulting in a more toned and sculpted appearance. If you struggle with fat deposits that have not responded to diet and exercise, you may be an ideal candidate for this body contouring procedure. How Much Does Liposuction Cost?
Liposuction FAQs
Does the fat ever come back?
NO! This is the #1 myth in liposuction and body contouring. The fat, once removed, never returns. What is important to remember, though, is that the rest of the body can still gain weight because if you’re taking in extra calories, they have to go somewhere, right? Forgive the grisly analogy, but imagine if you lose a finger in an accident. Finger is gone, right? Then you go on and gain 50lbs. The rest of you got bigger, but that finger is still gone, right? Same concept with liposuction. The removed fat is gone forever, but if your diet is poor, you can still gain weight in the remaining fat stores in your body.
How long does liposuction last?
Liposuction results can last for many years, but their longevity depends on factors like the amount of fat removed, the patient’s weight and lifestyle, and skin elasticity. Maintaining a stable weight helps ensure lasting results, though remaining fat cells can expand with weight gain. Noticeable changes appear within 4-6 weeks, with final results visible after up to a year.
Will liposuction flatten my stomach?
Liposuction can flatten your stomach if you have good skin tone, isolated fat deposits, and are near your ideal weight. It’s effective for enhancing a toned look and restoring a sculpted profile after pregnancy, but results vary based on skin quality and anatomy.
Is liposuction very painful?
Liposuction is generally not very painful during the procedure, as sedation and mild pain medications help keep you comfortable without the need for general anesthesia. This approach enhances safety, reduces costs, and makes you more engaged in the process. While some soreness and discomfort can be expected during recovery, most patients find it manageable with over-the-counter medication.
How long do you stay in hospital after liposuction?
Liposuction is typically an outpatient procedure, meaning you don’t need to stay in the hospital. Since general anesthesia is not required, most patients can go home the same day after a short observation period. Some soreness and discomfort are expected during recovery, but it is usually manageable with over-the-counter medication.
What do liposuction scars look like?
Liposuction scars are typically small, about a few millimeters in size, and strategically placed in inconspicuous areas such as natural skin folds. They may appear as tiny, faint lines that fade over time, becoming barely noticeable. The final appearance depends on factors like skin type, healing ability, and proper aftercare. Most scars continue to improve over several months to a year.
