Although we’ll use the term “labiaplasty” throughout, please take it to mean the whole spectrum of intimate surgery, which most commonly also means clitoral hood reduction, but may also mean any number of custom variants.

What Does Labiaplasty Treat?
Labiaplasty surgery is a procedure used to reshape the labia and/or surrounding tissues. The most common procedure is labia minora reduction, which removes excess skin from the smaller/inner set of labia. Many times, we will also correct skin excess in the clitoral hood. Other procedures in this field include labia majora reduction (if too big/prominent) or fat grafting (if too small/deflated), or correction of the tissues at the very front or very back of the labia to create a ‘sleeker’ appearance or vaginal tightening.

Functional benefits:
Labiaplasty can help with discomfort during exercise, hygiene, sexual activity, and urinary tract infections. For example, it can reduce chafing, tugging, and twisting and prevent the labia minora from getting caught or stretched during sex.

Techniques - Edge Trim vs Wedge - Which is Best?
You already know the answer—it depends on YOU! Dr. Turin has used both techniques extensively and several variations, so we can offer you both if you prefer. However, we have found that most patients benefit from the Edge Trim technique most. It was initially less popular due to concerns with scalloping along the skin edge and poor scar healing along the labia’s edge. Thankfully, with modern suture materials, techniques, and Dr. Turin’s skilled hands, these issues are a thing of the past.
The Edge Technique allows you to have full control over the amount of skin you leave behind or remove along the entire length of the labia—from the clitoral hood to the perineum. You can tell us exactly what you’d like to see; we can reliably make it happen with this technique! The wedge technique is less popular now as it has a slightly higher complication (dehiscence) rate. However, it is still a reasonable and available option for patients with labia minora excess in just the middle ⅓ of the labia.
At the end of the day, the right choice is whatever will produce the most beautiful result safely, and Dr. Turin is available to help guide you through the pros and cons of both!
What to Expect During Labiaplasty Surgery
Your experience starts long before the actual procedure. Once you’ve had a chance to meet with Dr. Turin and agree on the plan, we will set up your pre-operative appointment, during which you will have more time dedicated to going into details about your preferences, recovery, etc. You’ll also get Dr. Turin’s cell phone number at that time so that you can reach out to him directly with any other questions. If you’d like another in-person or virtual meeting before surgery, we will also make that happen for you – whatever it takes until you’re comfortable and in the right frame of mind!
The Day of The Procedure
On the day of surgery, you’ll talk again with Dr. Turin and go over all the markings together. We will provide you with some numbing cream you’ll apply before coming to the office so that you’ll already be somewhat numbed up when you arrive! We prefer to do the procedure in the comfort of our clinic procedure room, where you’ll have some sedation and mild pain medications to make you comfortable. However, you’ll still be awake with no general anesthesia. We take great pride in providing a very comfortable experience for our patients.
There are also a lot of safety benefits to avoiding general anesthesia besides the obvious cost savings as well. We commonly perform labiaplasties with total comfort for our patients with no sedation at all. Just gentle and smooth local lidocaine. You can drive yourself home after!
The Procedure
Labiaplasty Recovery and Aftercare
All our labiaplasty patients go home right after surgery to recover in familiar surroundings. Pain is variable but usually well controlled with just Tylenol and ibuprofen. About 2 out of 5 patients will take 1 or 2 of the narcotic pills to help sleep the first couple of days.
The most important part of recovery is taking it easy in terms of activity. Walking and being up on your feet in the first week post-op can really slow things down. Most patients can return to work within a day if it’s desk work and after a week if it’s something where they’re constantly up and about. You’ll shower the next day, resume light exercise in ~2-3 weeks, and then tight clothes/bicycling/sexual activity at 4-6 weeks, depending on how you heal.

Is a Labiaplasty Surgery Right for Me?
Generally, someone who is reasonably healthy and not currently smoking can undergo the procedure. However, during your personal labiaplasty consultation with Dr. Turin, you can discuss whether a labiaplasty is the right choice for your body goals.
Labiaplasty FAQs
Will Labiaplasty leave noticeable scars?
Scars from labiaplasty are typically not visible as soon as 4-6 weeks after the procedure. With proper healing time, the incisions heal beautifully and become effectively invisible
Is Labiaplasty the same as vaginal rejuvenation?
Vaginal rejuvenation is another broad term encompassing any procedure that revitalizes the outer or inner vagina or both. Labiaplasty focuses on the external portions of the genitalia (labia minora, labia majora, clitoral hood, etc), which we routinely address in our clinic. For surgical vaginal rejuvenation (tightening), we also have options that we can perform at a surgery center with more sedation, and we have colleagues that we partner with to offer nonsurgical vaginal tightening options.
Will my sexual partner notice a difference after labiaplasty?
Maybe – this depends on how much change you’d like to see regarding your appearance and your partner’s observation skills! Truthfully, the scarring in these procedures is so minimal that once healed, most people cannot tell that any surgery was done, and it appears this was you all along!
