Scottsdale's BBL Expert: ~80% Fat Graft Survival Rate
Enhance Your Curves Using Fat Transfer to the Hips and Buttocks
We specialize in boutique liposuction and fat transfer procedures, and the BBL for us is not a cookie-cutter procedure but is, instead, a total shape makeover that we can do for you in a few hours, which no amount of squats and dieting ever could. It’s almost unfair that this option is available.
Our BBL expert is Dr. Sergey Turin, who is the founder of Koda Plastic Surgery, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, and a leading BBL surgeon in Scottsdale, AZ. He only does 1 of these procedures a day to put 110% effort into giving you the perfect transformation you’ve been envisioning. He’ll spend all the time in the world with you until you both have a shared understanding of the treatment plan and the aesthetics you seek. We will customize your donor sites (do you want a smaller waist? slimmer arms? a thigh gap? all of the above? Yoga abs, or a softer look?) and create a treatment plan just for you. Moreover, Dr. Sergey Turin uses the most cutting-edge technique to harvest and process the fat graft, which results in ~80% graft take on average! That’s about double the usual! We’ll be happy to tell you and show you all the steps that go into the process – there’s no secret here, just a lot of hard work and experience!
You’ve probably been thinking about these types of procedures for a while, right? Maybe you have some wish pics of what you’d like to see in the mirror every morning? We’re here to make that happen for you. Whether you live in Scottsdale, Gilbert, Chandler, or out of state, give us a call or shoot us a text and let’s talk about how you want to change your life. Our number is (480) 256-8018, whenever you’re ready.

Is the Golden Age of the BBL Over?
Fashion changes, right? Sure, except the ideal female shape has never changed since the dawn of humanity. Full buttocks, round hips, and a slender waist are seen in Stone Age fertility figurines, from the Rubenesque women’s curves in Renaissance art to the modern age of Kim K and similarly built women. Clearly, the aesthetic appeal of round, well-shaped buttocks and hips has been and always will be in style. After all, that’s why we have glute thrust machines in every gym, right?
In the 2010s, there was massive popularity of BBL, with patients requesting dramatic shapes, as Kim K, Cardi B, and J Lo were at the height of their popularity. We have seen a big change in the last few years as the XXXL booty is falling out of style, and a more athletic look has gained popularity. The overwhelming majority of our patients are specifically asking to NOT look like Kim K or Cardi B, and most women now are seeking a more natural silhouette, whether it be just filling in the hip dips or creating a tasteful enhancement of the buttocks already there.
The beauty of the BBL lies in its flexibility. We take fat from areas where you don’t want it (usually the waist/abdomen/trunk, but sometimes from the upper arms or inner thighs)—so that’s already a win—and then put it into the areas where you’d like more volume—hip dips, buttocks, hips, or breasts. And because it’s your own tissue, the results are permanent and feel 100% natural—because they are natural.
So, the answer is no—the BBL is just as popular as it used to be, but now that term means so much more—it can be anything from a very subtle filling of the hip dips in an athlete who wants a more feminine look to an XXL booty enhancement.
What Can a BBL Correct?
A Brazilian Butt Lift, or BBL, is designed to enhance the shape, projection, and overall balance of your lower body using your own natural fat. Rather than simply increasing size, a well-performed BBL focuses on proportion, contour, and harmony between the waist, hips, and buttocks.
Here’s what a BBL can address:
Flat or Under-Projected Buttocks
Hip Dips
Hip dips, also known as violin hips, are inward curves along the outer hips between the hip bone and upper thigh. They are completely natural and often related to your skeletal structure and fat distribution. However, some patients feel they create an uneven or indented silhouette.
A BBL can smooth hip dips by carefully placing fat into the depressed areas, creating a softer, more continuous curve from the waist to the thighs. This helps achieve a rounder, more balanced lower-body contour and improves how clothing fits.
Lack of Waist-to-Hip Definition
Asymmetry
Volume Loss After Weight Changes
Weight loss, pregnancy, or aging can lead to deflation in the buttocks. A BBL restores volume while reshaping the surrounding areas for a rejuvenated, lifted appearance.

What’s Different About the BBL and Fat Transfer Procedures at Koda?
Any fat transfer procedure has three parts: the harvest, the fat processing, and the graft placement.
The key differences that you’ll want to know about when deciding on where to get your procedures done are:
How many procedures does the surgeon perform daily, and what type of experience does he have with liposuction?
Dr. Turin only performs one of these procedures on any given day to maintain the best possible result. He is a published expert in liposuction, fat grafting, and BBL safety. He is also a liposuction expert, and almost ½ of his practice at this point is liposuction and fat transfer revisions.
What type of fat processing is done and why?
The surgeon should be able to explain this step in detail and the rationale for their choices so you can see that they’re keeping up with the latest evidence.
We use the Viality fat processing system for every case to maximize fat graft retention, allowing fat cells to survive. Moreover, we spend extra time harvesting the fat with smaller cannulas, allowing the graft to be smoother and take better. This allows us to get ~80% fat graft take in these procedures, almost double the usual numbers.
How is the graft being placed for best take?
To maximize safety, we always place the graft in the subcutaneous space and do this with the patient under sedation, NOT general anesthesia. See the evidence behind our choices here. Dr. Sergey Turin has also published and presented extensively on the safety of fat grafts to the buttocks. Safety is the absolute priority in our practice—everything else comes second.
What to Expect During BBL Surgery
Your experience starts long before the actual procedure. Once you’ve had a chance to meet with Dr. Turin and agree on the plan, we will set up your preoperative appointment, during which you will have more time dedicated to going into details about your preferences, recovery, etc. You’ll also get Dr. Turin’s cell phone number so you can contact him directly with any other questions. If you’d like another in-person or virtual meeting before surgery, we will make that happen for you – whatever it takes until you’re comfortable and in the right frame of mind!
Preparing for the Procedure
On the day of surgery, you’ll talk again with Dr. Turin and go over all the markings together. We prefer to do the procedure in the comfort of our clinic procedure room, where you’ll have some sedation and mild pain medications to make you comfortable. However, you’ll still be awake with NO general anesthesia.
We take great pride in providing our patients with a comfortable experience. Aside from the obvious cost savings, there are many safety benefits to avoiding general anesthesia. Moreover, when you’re comfortable and awake, the experience changes—it’s no longer that “you’re having something done.” Instead, it becomes us working together to create the changes we want to see. You will feel so much more ownership of your results!
The Procedure
The procedure usually lasts around 2.5-4 hours, with the first 30-60 minutes to ensure you’re in the perfect mind space and the vibes are just right before we start. Then, we numb up all the areas to be treated with a lidocaine solution, and only once that’s fully kicked in do we start the liposuction—and at this point, the lidocaine makes it a virtually painless experience.
Once the fat is harvested and the liposuctioned areas look perfect, we process the fat, numb up the recipient sites, and place the fat there gently by hand, using many, many passes and only placing tiny amounts of fat graft throughout so that we maximize graft take and minimize the chances of fat graft necrosis/cysts/lumps. After we treat all the target areas, we close the access sites and place you in a compression garment before letting you go, awake, to recover in the comfort of your home.
Brazilian Butt Lift Recovery and Aftercare
Immediate
Some common things patients experience during their initial recovery period include swelling, bruising, tenderness, and discomfort.
After your surgery, you should focus on sleeping on your stomach. You should avoid sleeping on your back and buttocks until you are fully healed.
1 Month Post-Op
2-3 Months Post-Op
It may take 2 to 3 months to heal from the BBL procedure fully. During your recovery, it is important to eat healthy. Eating healthy and focusing on taking care of yourself aids in the healing process significantly. In addition, developing these healthy lifestyle habits will ensure you maintain your new hourglass shape. Once Dr. Turin clears you to work out and return to all physical activity, focusing on lower-body workouts that target the glutes to keep your BBL tight and firm is a good idea.
We also can customize the procedure and our technique to each patient: if you’re from out of town, we will use absorbable sutures under the skin to close your access sites so that you don’t have to seek out someone to remove them; if you’re not able to take a lot of time off work, we can modify the fat harvest to allow you to get back to work more quickly; if you’re looking for an XXL result or if you’ve had lipo before, we can create a special plan that may involve staging things to get you the best results.
Recovery Timeline
Back to work: 2 days
Heavy physical activity is prohibited: 1-2 weeks
You will see a difference in shape and size: 1 month
Healing: 2-3 months
Who is the Best BBL Candidate?
A Brazilian Butt Lift is a plastic surgery procedure using fat harvested from other areas of the body to reshape the entire silhouette of the body, including the waist, abdomen, hips, and butt. This procedure uses natural fat extracted from the body rather than implants, resulting in natural-looking, permanent results. You are typically considered the best BBL candidate if:
- You are in good physical and emotional health
- You would like to see a more pronounced hourglass contour overall
- You’d like more volume in your buttocks, hips, or hip dips
- You desire more voluminous, rounded, and curvier buttocks, regardless of whether you had them before weight loss, aging, or kids or if you were never blessed with them to begin with
- You have excess fatty tissue in other areas of your body
- You can refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol for the specified duration, usually at least three weeks before and after the procedure
During your BBL consultation, Dr. Turin will take the time to understand your aesthetic body goals fully. He will then give you an honest assessment and explain what can safely be achieved with your body shape and how to achieve it best. Together, we will then decide if this cosmetic surgery is right for your body and goals.
Skinny BBLs at Koda Plastic Surgery
Dr. Sergey Turin is proud to be one of the few liposuction experts who routinely performs “skinny BBL” procedures. A skinny BBL is conceptually the same as a traditional BBL. The difference? In a lean or petite patient, less fat is available for harvest, which means it’s much more difficult to harvest gently and smoothly. The problem with liposuction in lean patients is that every little mistake, every tiny error in the liposuction technique, is immediately visible because there is so little surrounding fat to hide it. These cases are Dr. Turin’s specialty, and he has perfected a very different technique for harvesting in these situations. He uses much smaller cannulas and takes extra steps to ensure the donor sites look perfect once done.
Dr. Turin routinely performs liposuction and fat transfer procedures in women with BMIs as low as 18. Although the total amount of fat harvested is much lower than in “usual” liposuction cases, the case still takes the same amount of time—it’s just THAT important to us to make sure that you look totally natural after our procedures without any contour issues or divots.
Fat graft takes then becomes absolutely critical when so little fat is available, which is why we are so proud of the ~80% fat graft survival with our current systems.
If you are lean but are curious whether a BBL with fat transfer is possible for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Turin to discuss your options in detail.
Brazilian Butt Lift FAQs
How long does a Brazilian butt lift last?
BBL results last FOREVER. Again, this is permanent. This procedure is a shape change procedure, not a size change procedure. We will work tirelessly to create that perfect body shape you want, and then it’ll stay that way. The fat will never migrate back, and then whether you gain or lose weight, your shape will remain the same.
If you gain weight, you will become heavier, no question, but you’ll also see that your weight will preferentially go to where the fat graft was placed, and vice versa if you lose weight, you’ll see that your overall size will decrease, while maintaining the shape we created. Moreover, your results will improve if you maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly.
Our procedures are designed so that any progress you make will just be highlighted!

How do you sleep after a BBL?
After your surgery, you should focus on sleeping on your stomach. You should avoid sleeping on your back and buttocks until you are fully healed.
Most people find that using a big body pillow and placing it between the legs helps make sleep more possible. The pillow helps support the back and hips, making for a more comfortable sleep post-op.
How much does a BBL cost?
We like to be as transparent as possible with our pricing. Even though it will obviously vary significantly from patient to patient, we will try to put up a monthly post on our pricing page with approximate average prices for the most commonly requested procedures.
